Kieron Coyle has been named the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) Technician of the Year.
Kieron, 27, from Pontllanfraith in South East Wales is a Senior Building Information Modelling Technician, within Hydrock’s Building Performance Division. In this position, Kieron takes on numerous roles and responsibilities within Hydrock, with his main role being the digital delivery of building service projects across building sectors, with values up to £45 million, from initial concept through to their construction. One of Kieron’s recent highlights was leading on the MEP BIM delivery up to the technical design stage of a secondary school.
He also takes a leading role for the digital innovation within the group. Kieron develops and helps to drive forward the division’s templates, 3D content and standards, as well as digital automation of repetitive tasks such as the automation of the production of schedules for mechanical equipment.
On winning, he said: “I can’t believe I won, the other finalist has an amazing career so the final decision must have been extremely difficult for the judges. I would like to thank all my team, past and present, particularly Hydrock’s National BIM manager Lewis Cullinane. I have enjoyed working on projects within my local area and helping to drive innovation within Hydrock. I hope this encourages others from similar backgrounds to pursue a career in engineering.”
The IET Achievement Awards exist to recognise individuals from all over the world who have made exceptional contributions to the advancement of engineering, technology and science in any sector. This can be through research and development in their respective technical field or through their leadership of an enterprise.

This is always an extremely strong category and he should be very proud to win this award, a marked reflection of his achievements.”

The Apprentice and Technician Awards are part of the IET’s Achievement Awards and Scholarships programme, which this year provided £1million in awards, prizes and scholarships to celebrate excellence and research in the sector and encourage the next generation of engineers and technicians.
