One of Brighton & Hove City Council’s key schools for children with special education or disabilities needs (SEND) has been given major upgrade by Morgan Sindall Construction as part of an inspiring programme of merger, refurbishment and expansion.

The £6 million project has seen the former Downs View Hollingdean School and Downs View Woodingdean School merge to produce a new SEND facility for 155 children aged from two to 16-years-old.

The scheme was procured under the Brighton and Hove Strategic Construction Partnership and works have included a substantial extension of the current building and the creation of five new classrooms with provisions for pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), including hoists and sensory areas. The project includes a new school hall with stunning coastal views, a food technology room, medical room, planning rooms, a soft play room and an interactive assessment room.

During construction, Morgan Sindall Construction and their supply chain partners gifted the school an outdoor learning area, the Woodland Walk, with a tarmac path to allow for wheelchair accessibility and leftover materials utilised to provide special insect houses for the area

High-vis jackets were also donated to staff working with the taxis bringing pupils the school, and a brand new footpath with lights was built to allow the caretaker better access to his house, which neighbours the school, during the build.

The site team worked with Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to provide on-site training for local fire crews, which enabled them to provide the school children the opportunity of having a much enjoyed tour of the fire engines.

Guy Hannell, Area Director for Morgan Sindall Construction said: “Our team is delighted to have supported the expansion of what is an outstanding SEND school. As a main contractor we are always aware of our part in ensuring what we build help shape and improve lives and this is especially the case when it comes to SEND school design and delivery.

“We have enjoyed working closely with and would like to extend our gratitude to Brighton & Hove City Council, Downs View School and our wider project partners in the successful completion of a school that will provide generations of local children with the best in education provision”
