RIBA appoints new Standards Committee

The Royal Institute of British Architects has appointed a new committee to oversee standards for the profession.

Reporting to RIBA Council, the RIBA Standards Committee will focus on the knowledge and skills of RIBA members, and their relationship with the public. It will oversee the RIBA Codes of Professional Conduct and Practice, complaints and disciplinary processes, CPD compliance and competency criteria setting.

Appointed by RIBA Council following an open application process, the RIBA Standards Committee currently comprises:

  • Simon Barnes (Lay Member)
  • Tzena James
  • Susan Lindsey
  • Chithra Marsh
  • Barrie Neal (Lay Member)
  • Roger Shrimplin (Vice Chair)
  • Jonathan Rees (Lay Chair)
  • Elizabeth Thornhill (Lay Member)

Chair of the RIBA Standards Committee, Jonathan Rees, has broad governance experience in the public, not-for-profit and charity sectors and has specialist expertise in regulation, consumer policy, public policy and equality and inclusion.

Vice Chair, Roger Shrimplin, is an architect, town planner and member of RIBA Council.

RIBA President, Alan Jones, said: “The RIBA is committed to setting and upholding the highest standards for our members and practices, to protect the architects’ profession and maintain public confidence. In the context of concerns around employment practice, proposed amendments to the Architects Act and discussions about the future of competency monitoring, establishing this new committee is extremely timely. We are very pleased to be able to draw on the expertise of Jonathan Rees, alongside his fellow committee members.”

Chair, Jonathan Rees, said: “I am delighted to have been appointed Chair of the RIBA Standards Committee. I look forward to working with my fellow Committee members to help the RIBA deliver and develop its vital work to promote and maintain the highest professional standards.”
