Sam Stacey and Ed McCann will be speaking at Keltbray’s conference
Keltbray, the leading UK specialist engineering and construction business, today announces the speaker line up at its HIPER® Pile Symposium at the Institution of Civil Engineers, London.
Keltbray is hosting a symposium at the Institution of Civil Engineers on the 18th May 2021, to present the latest innovations in the piling industry, including low-carbon concrete developments and long-term wireless data acquisition, and raise awareness of the significance of cross sector collaboration. The symposium will also mark the product launch of the innovative HIPER® Pile for commercial use at scale.
Keynotes will be given by Sam Stacey, Challenge Director at UKRI and Ed McCann, Senior Vice President at the Institution of Civil Engineers.
In addition to revealing the core principles of the HIPER® Pile and how such innovations can actively reduce embodied carbon, programme durations, and construction risk on a project, the event will also cover the following topics:
- Contributing to net-zero targets
- Embracing circular economy
- Knowledge and technology transfer between academic and industry settings
- Understanding innovative ways to add value to your project
- Realising the path towards reducing whole life carbon emissions
Significant uptake of innovative techniques in the piling industry has been stagnant over the past 60 years, with the last main innovation being the advent of CFA piling.
The Transforming Construction Challenge (TCC) was initiated to accelerate the shift in construction and overturn a system that wasn’t working well, in which the priority was being given to the cheapest solution.
TCC forms part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund which is being delivered by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). £170m has been invested by UKRI, and is being matched with £250m from the construction industry, to maximise the advantages from a global shift to clean growth, by supporting the development, manufacture and use of low-carbon technologies, systems and services.

Ed McCann, Senior Vice President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, said: “Our industry faces two principle challenges: to overcome chronic productivity problems and to rapidly decarbonise. HIPER® pile is a great example of how we can start to meet these challenges. I’m not sure whether I am most impressed by the idea of the hollow core or the cunning way that skin friction is enhanced, but like all really good ideas it all seems obvious in hind-sight. The use of low carbon concrete and the enhanced performance as an energy pile are icing on the cake, demonstrating how it is possible to both deliver productivity and carbon benefits!”
