Building work to deliver new Passivhaus housing on behalf of City of York Council has been hailed as best practice in the creation of zero carbon homes following a visit from the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
Caddick Construction welcomed Chief Executive of the CIOB, Caroline Gumble to its Burnholme Green site, which is one of two developments under construction for the Council’s Housing Delivery Programme. The development comprises 78 Passivhaus homes, which have been designed to rigorous energy efficiency standards.
The visit comes 18 months after Caddick Construction started work on site alongside its delivery of a further 34 Passivhaus homes at Duncombe Square.
Of the visit to Burnholme Green, Caroline Gumble commented: “As part of a fantastic day with built environment professionals in York, I enjoyed meeting some of the Caddick Construction team and seeing their work to create the city’s first ever zero carbon homes. I was impressed with what I saw and with the approach to delivering certified Passivhaus homes, the focus on energy efficiency and keeping the construction low-carbon. This is going to be such an important part of the future of the industry and it’s great to see it being embedded now.”
The CIOB’s visit to Burnholme Green follows a presentation from Caddick Construction at Castleford College’s Employer Forum on the two net zero carbon in use housing schemes and the principles and challenges of Passivhaus.
Designed by Mikhail Riches, both the Burnholme Green and Duncombe Square developments will feature a range of one to four-bedroom homes that are being constructed with low-carbon timber. Features also include rooftop solar panels and air source heat pumps to make the homes zero carbon in use.
Forming part of a wider community regeneration project, Burnholme Green will also feature high quality green spaces, tree-lined streets and bike storage to encourage health and wellbeing for its residents.

Cllr Michael Pavlovic, Executive Member for Housing and Safer Communities at City of York Council, said: “This is the biggest Passivhaus development in the north of England and supports our climate change target. 60% of these super energy efficient homes will be offered for shared ownership and social rent and will markedly reduce residents’ fuel bills.”
