Caddick Construction has handed over a new extension at Loreto Sixth Form College in Hulme, a year after work commenced on the £10m contract to create a new three-storey campus building.
Completion at Loreto Sixth Form College marks the culmination of a programme of works to build a 24,000 sq ft extension on Moss Road West adjacent to the existing campus on Chichester Road South.
The new building will facilitate the growth of the college by an additional 600 students, bringing much needed capacity in post-16 provision to the city. The new campus building sits alongside the existing college, with facilities to enhance the learning environment and curriculum delivery. These include 20 classrooms, a lecture theatre with a seating capacity of 200 and a new study centre.
With an emphasis on sustainability, the new building has 39.8% of its electrical demands met by renewable sources with features including air source heat pumps, solar panels, passive ventilation systems and night cooling. Sustainable forms of transport also form part of the campus investment, including EV charging and bike storage for 100 bikes.
Caddick began work last spring, which has also included partial refurbishment of the existing college building to create new science labs. A science garden and landscaped reflection spaces have also been created to maximise the use of green space.
The college remained fully operational throughout the work. Caddick staff members supported students who are aspiring to careers in engineering, construction and project management through education initiatives, including an aspirational careers talk.
The business also donated £3,000 to a range of local charities, including the Greater Manchester Youth Network and Manchester Young Lives. Building work also created opportunities for 11 apprentices and one T-level student.
Dave Saville, Regional Managing Director, Caddick Construction North West, commented: “A year delivering our project at Loreto Sixth Form College has flown by, but what the team has achieved in this time is exceptional. We’ve created a brand new, sustainability-focused campus building for education excellence, and while doing so we’ve also worked closely with the college to support their young people. Our intention is always to have a positive impact – throughout our work and beyond – and Loreto Sixth Form College is an excellent example of this commitment.”
Michael Jaffrain, Principal at Loreto College, added: “We are delighted to be expanding our campus and investing in the future of the many students who choose to study with us. Caddick have been highly responsive to the needs of our community and the newly constructed St Vincent’s building and landscaped spaces are a welcome addition to the estate.”
