Award Success at Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards 2023

Cambridge Investment Partnership is celebrating after scooping three awards at the Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards 2023.

Flagship development, Ironworks, Mill Road was named Best New Neighbourhood while Lauren New, Technical Coordinator for Hill and an integral part of the Cambridge Investment Partnership team was named Young Professional of the Year. Hill was also named Contractor of the Year for Ironworks and Colville Road Phase 2 at the award ceremony.

Tom Hill, Managing Director of Hill Group comments, “We are absolutely thrilled to have our work and team recognised at these awards. To have Lauren named Young Professional of the Year is testament to the hard work and dedication she has put in over the past few years  delivering Ironworks and now leading on the technical side of our 21 Passivhaus certified council homes at Fen Road, Ditton Road and Borrowdale.

“We are also delighted to have our flagship development win this prestigious award, which recognises developments that are inclusively designed and accessible to all as well as reflecting best practice in design, health and wellbeing and community involvement.

“It’s also an honour to be named Contractor of the Year for our work delivering Ironworks and Colville Road and we look forward to continuing to provide award winning new communities across Cambridge through our partnership.”

The judging panel was chaired by Dame Fiona Reynolds, former master of Emmanuel College Cambridge and former director-general of the National Trust. The submission process and judging process were jointly facilitated by the GCSPS and CFCI volunteer trustees.

Dame Fiona Reynolds, Chair of Greater Cambridge Design and Construction Awards judges, said: “We were delighted to see the range and quality of the entries, including a growing number from outside the city.  Each year, there is a greater focus on the environment and accessibility alongside inspiring architecture and design, all of which we warmly welcome.”

The judges commented on Ironworks “The Ironworks project involved continuous engagement with the local community throughout, informing many small changes and mitigations to the plan.  The outcome is a mix of streets and spaces having different characters, and new homes with varying typologies, alongside a large central green space is for children’s play, access to nature and management of water. While still in its early development, we believe it has the potential to provide a coherent and lively new neighbourhood in Cambridge, building on Mill Road’s origins and spirit, while making a significant contribution to local housing need.”

The judges commented on Contractor of the Year, “It was clear how engaged Hill were in all aspects of the schemes, from community liaison to making appropriate modifications as the schemes progressed. In particular at Colville Road, we heard how experimentation and learning led to the adoption of better environmental standards, which will be applied to future projects.”

Cllr Gerri Bird, Executive Councillor for Housing at Cambridge City Council and CIP board member said, “These awards celebrate the very best development in Greater Cambridge and it’s wonderful to have Ironworks win the coveted Best New Neighbourhood. This new community is a prime example of how we can create a tenure blind socially cohesive development which provides equal numbers of new council homes and private sale homes along with community facilities.

“Well done to Lauren on her award. She is a fantastic role model for anyone thinking about starting a career in the industry and a valued member of our team. I would also like to congratulate Hill on winning Contractor of the Year. Through the creation of our partnership, we have been able bring together the best in public and private sector expertise to enable us to invest in and transform council-owned and other land across the city and provide homes that are fit for the future.”
